My Work At Home Mum Life

work at home mum

My name is Suzanne, I am a work at home mum, my friends call me Suz or Suzy, I have never been a Sue or a Susan - it just doesn't seem to suit me!

For the past two years I have been a work at home mum, fitting my online businesses around my children. This is us about to embark on a particularly messy muck hunt! Never been on a muck hunt? All you need are your wellie boots and lots of puddles, having a pile of towels ready for when you return is also a good idea! Taking children or grandchildren is not compulsory but it helps, they have an amazing ability to find the biggest and muckiest puddles.

Having the ability to do what I want, when I want and then work when I want to, makes a lot of people envious but really anyone can, you just need a passion. But I am getting ahead of myself, lets start at the beginning.

It all started after the birth of our first child in March 2004, Bobby, I had my six months maternity leave and then had to go back to work full time. I travelled a lot and some days I would end up driving liking a maniac to be back in time to pick him up. At one years old he was often one of the last children to get picked up from nursery which I hated, he knew no different. Around his first birthday I found out that I was pregnant and new government legislation meant that I would be able to take a years maternity leave, I was really looking forward to being at home with the two of them.

Emily was born in November 2005 and for the first six months I enjoyed just being mum; playgroups, tumble tots, toddler splash and lots of puddle splashing. We had a great time and then suddenly it was time to start thinking about returning to work, I was not so keen! We looked at our finances and with the cost of two children in full time child care I would be going to work for my company car, pension and any bonus. Instead I decided to go on a parental career break that my company was offering, work 2 weeks a year for 5 years and then have the option of return at the end.

So I was now at home with the children full time but I knew it wasn't a forever thing, this was an opportunity for me to start my own business and be a work at home mum. My career background is in Hospitality, events and sales so I looked to what I knew and came up with the idea of running my own event business. My first show was a Parent and Child Expo. I worked hard selling exhibition stands and promoting the event for 5 months, the children were in childcare for two mornings and this was when I phoned and visited clients. The afternoons were when most people returned my calls and with a baby and a toddler in the house it was anything but quiet! I hated every minute of it but thought if it was successful it would be worth it.

The Expo was a success but I was not so sure, I wanted something that would fit in much easier with the children, I had already tried an mlm opportunity, sold on Ebay, completed a number of online surveys for a few dollars and investigated franchise opportunities with my husband, nothing seemed right. And then it hit me - earn money doing something you enjoy! Simple!

What I love is organising personal events; weddings, anniversaries and parties and also investigating every type of money making opportunity there is - well you don't want to miss the next big thing do you? But whatever your passion you can turn it into a business and be a work at home mum.

I realised that whatever I did to earn money it would need to fit in around the children and so I started to investigate online opportunites, the problem was I knew nothing about earning money online. Luckily for me I came across SBI.

SBI stands for Site Build It! and helps you to turn any hobby, passion or skill into a successful online business. Not everyone knows you can make money from almost any subject online.

But build a website, well I definately knew nothing about that, I knew plenty about events and each day knew more and more about dodgy internet scams. I took a look at this video to see how SBI worked and also looked at lots of work at home mum case studies being successful with SBI and then decided what have I got to lose? SBI offers a full money back guarantee if you are not happy.

I started building my first site in 2007, Cheap Wedding Solutions and it earns money through Google Adsense and various affiliate links, it's doing really well. I wasn't expecting to write about cheap weddings, weddings in general was where I thought I was going but SBI shows you how to find profitable niches within your passion.

Next my husband Simon caught the SBI bug and he now has Anniversary Gifts By Year, the old romantic! He is working towards being a work at home dad!

work at home dad And as writing about what you love is so much easier we developed this site 1st Birthday Party Ideas, this site is trully our baby as it is our newest site but is already attracting lots of new visitors.

So what are you waiting for?

If you have any questions about SBI and being able to be a work at home mum or dad, drop us a line here!

Good luck!

Suz and Simon
